Awareness of the global need to shift toward a more sustainable lifestyle is growing and we can all play a positive part in the movement towards living consciously. In 2018 I shared numerous articles and videos on sustainable swaps but lets be honest, the list is never ending of eco friendly switches we can all make, so here are some more for you to try in 2019!
Wipe Responsibly.
Yep, we are kicking off with what you use to wipe your bum! Did you realise toilet paper is made from trees? Trees we need to keep this planet healthy! Who Gives A Crap sell toilet paper which is made without trees, from recycled materials, and they donate 50% of their profits to building toilets for those in need. Winner winner.
Spill The Tea.
Did you realise most teabags are laced with plastic? This means that they can’t biodegrade and will stick around for hundreds of years, all for a cheeky cuppa! To avoid contributing to this issue you can buy loose leaf tea which you pop in a strainer, or you can invest in biodegradable teabag brands such as Teapigs.
Make The Switch.
Fossil fuels aren’t cool and most traditional energy suppliers support them. You can avoid putting money towards these industries by switching to an eco provider such as Bulb. They provide 100% renewable energy and 10% green gas at an affordable price, which actually ends up being cheaper than most other companies. It is a no brainer!
Buy Less Clothes.
Did you know is takes 1800 gallons of water to make a pair of jeans? Fashion is one of the most environmentally destructive industries on the planet. One simple swap swap you can make in 2019 is to reduce your clothing consumption. I have a few friends who are not buying any new clothes in 2019 and instead sticking to purely secondhand or thrifted items. If like me you find that a little daunting, a great place to start is by limiting yourself to one new item a month maximum.
Wash Less.
Now I know this sounds a little rogue, but bear with me. I feel like nowadays there is an obsession with cleanliness, showering multiple times a day and washing clothes after one wear. Back when I was younger I would wear the same outfit for 4 days in a row before I washed it! Water isn’t an infinite resource and it is set to be in shorter and shorter supply, so here are some water friendly tips:
- Don’t wash your dishes under running water, fill a bowl to the minimum amount needed and use that.
- Shower once a day, when you actually need it, rather than just out of habit.
- See taking baths as a treat, they typically consume more water than showers.
- Turn off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth or washing your hands.
- Don’t be ashamed to wear the same outfit a few days in a row, no one will notice except you. Washing less frequently uses less water.
