Described as the “Pearl of the Balkans”, Montenegro has a wild beauty that attracts those with an adventurous spirit. Starting in Dubrovnik, get to know this beautiful city with a guided walk showcasing the famous Onofrio’s Fountain and the Franciscan monastery. Sample local food and if feeling energetic, hike into the hills above for incredible views of the Dalmation coastline. Moving onto Kotor, another city steeped in history – this time take in views from the sea whilst on a boat trip and visit the UNESCO World Heritage site – Perast. Heading into the mountains you will begin to see the magnitude of the landscape, vast mountain ranges and untouched environments that are home to an extensive variety of wildlife.
Durmitor is a national park with 50 peaks over 2000m, the highest being Bobotov Kuk standing at 2543m. This makes for some challenging hikes with incredibly rewarding views. Hiking is interspersed with the chance for some wild swimming, thanks to the crystal clear glacial lakes you’ll find on every trail. The most famous being Black Lake, taking on it’s colour from the surrounding pine forests.
Travelling down towards the Albanian border you will explore a number of other national parks on foot including Biogradsko Jezero, Skadar and Prokletije. The views will certainly make you feel on top of the world and the landscape, so remote and untouched provides the opportunity for plenty of wildlife spotting. The pristine Skadar region, known as ‘bird heaven’, is home to 163 bird species, 50 different mammals and the greatest variety of butterflies in Europe.
Hiking is on the itinerary most days. At times there will be some clambering over rocks and you’ll need a good level of fitness for the adventure. The price above does not include flights as we wanted to give you the option of where to fly from. As a guide, there are direct flights to Dubrovnik from Heathrow from £250 with BA. If you are happy to shop around there are definitely bargains to be had. Intrepid Travel will be on hand to help you throughout the booking process and will happily organise flights for you if required.
June is a great time to visit in terms of the local weather. The temperature by the sea will be similar to any southern Mediterranean country – generally 24-32 degrees. The higher you climb into the mountains, the higher likelihood there is of rain and cooler temperatures. However June is known to be the best time for hiking in this region and the chance of rainfall is low. If you are vegetarian or vegan, food options are limited away from the bigger towns and cities since the tourism industry is not highly developed, but we will endeavor to have options for all dietary requirements.
