I’ve been talking about going to Georgia for years and finally we’ve been able to pull this trip off. I’ve teamed up with World Expeditions to put together a two-week itinerary that will have us exploring the Svaneti region in the northwest, a largely untouched, remote part of this incredible country, but one that is so mountainous and so beautiful. I can’t wait to explore it with you! Here’s what we’ll get up to…
We’ll all arrive in Tbilisi on day one where you’re free to get settled and relax after a day of travelling or explore at your leisure, before we meet for a welcome dinner and briefing with our local guide in the evening.
The following day, day two, we’ll be taken on a walking tour of the city where we’ll see all the highlights of the Old Town: Narikala Fortress, the glass Bridge of Peace, Freedom Square and Rustaveli Avenue. We’ll also ride the metro and take the cable car to get even better views of the city before returning for dinner at a local restaurant.
On day three, we’ll drive to the 3,000 year-old capital and religious centre of Georgia, Mtskheta, to see its historical sites. From here, we’ll head to the town of Gori, stopping off at a local winery where we’ll get to taste wines and enjoy a homemade lunch. We’ll continue onto the Uplistsikhe Cave Town and then on to the western part of Georgia, arriving in Kutaisi, the second largest city in the country in the evening.
On day four, we’ll kick things off with a visit to the colourful Kutaisi agricultural market before we head to the village of Gordi and “Okatse” Canyon. The canyon walk first takes us though fields and brings us to the hanging bridge‑way attached to a rock plateau where you can walk out to the edge for incredible views of the canyon. From here we continue our journey to the Upper Svaneti province. Sat on the southern slopes of the central Caucasus Mountains and surrounded by 3,000m‑5,000m snow-capped peaks, Svaneti is the highest inhabited area in the Caucasus. Four of the ten highest mountains of the Caucasus are in the region – the perfect place for us to hike!
Now we’ve made it to the Svaneti region, we’ve got lots of hiking to do, starting off with a 19km hike from Etseri to Mazeri to see the two-pointed glacier of Ushba. We’ll hike through forests and climb to Baki Pass (2,430m) for incredible views of the area before resting our legs at a local guesthouse.
On day six, we’re starting our hike on the slopes of Mount Tetnuldi, which is often called the “Bride of Svaneti” since it’s always dressed in white! After a 15km hike, we’ll reach one of the most remote villages in this region, where only a handful of families live. They’ll kindly host us in their houses. The accommodation may be basic but the hospitality will be unmatched.
The next day, day seven, we have one of the biggest days on the trip, so we’ll be setting off in the early hours of the morning, following the Adishura River and making our way across the water on horseback! On today’s hike, we’ll travel to the impressive Adishi Glacier, through rich green fields, mountain flowers and some of the most colourful scenery. We’ll ascend to Chkhutnieri Pass (2,730m) before heading back down to the village of Ipari. After an incredible 20km hike, we’ll rest at a welcoming village guesthouse.
On day eight, we’ll hike to Ushguli village, the highest permanently inhabited village in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village is most famous for its abundance of iconic watch towers and this is where you get the view of the highest mountain in Georgia, Mt. Shkhara (5,201m). After plenty of hiking, we’ll have the afternoon free to rest or explore Ushguli and visit the Lamaria Church.
On day nine, we’ll walk 4-5 hours to Gorvashi Pass – a classic hike climbing onto the Svaneti mountain range. The walk offers some of the best panoramic views of the main ridge of the Greater Caucasus and on clear days, you will see Ushba, Elbrus and even more distant mountains. This hike might be shorter then previous days, but it isn’t an easy one! It’s a challenge but it’s so worth it for the views.
Next, we’ll drive back to Kutaisi stopping for a shorter hike to the highest mountain in Georgia, Shkhara (5,068m). On this hike, we’ll follow the Enguri River until we reach the glacier that feeds it before continuing on to Kutaisi.
On day 11, we’ll visit the Gelati Monastery, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, we’ll tour the underground Prometheus Grotto, and visit the “gem of the Black Sea”, the town of Batumi. Here we’ll have a short walking tour and see everything from the Dancing Fountains to the Alphabet Tower.
On day 12, we have plenty of free time to relax in Batumi, explore the town or visit the beach and swim in the Black Sea – it’s completely up to you. On day 13, we’ll say our goodbyes over breakfast before heading back home to rest and reminisce on an incredible trip.

One of the standout moments of the trip is the exhilarating experience of crossing the Adishura River on horseback. After a morning of trekking through lush green fields and vibrant mountain flora, the river crossing adds a unique twist to the adventure. It’s not just about the thrill; it’s about immersing yourself in the local way of life, connecting with the landscape in an unforgettable way.
